Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between copyediting and proofreading?
Copyediting involves improving the overall clarity, structure, and flow of your text. This includes checking grammar, punctuation, consistency, and ensuring that your writing is clear, concise, and engaging. Copyediting may involve rewording or reorganizing sentences for better readability.
Proofreading is the final step in the editing process. It focuses on identifying and correcting any formatting, spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors that remain after the content has been edited for style and clarity. Proofreading ensures your document is polished and error-free.
How do I know if I need copyediting or proofreading?
If your writing is already complete and you’re just looking for a final review of spelling, punctuation, and grammar, you likely need proofreading.
If your text could benefit from improvements in style, flow, or structure, or if it feels a bit clunky or unclear, copyediting will provide more value.
They are both invaluable to the quality of writing, so I always recommend authors have their work both copyedited and proofread.
How long will it take to edit or proofread my manuscript?
The turnaround time depends on the length and complexity of the project, as well as my current availability. A more precise timeline can be provided once I assess the project.
Do you edit for style and tone?
Yes! I tailor my copyediting services to match the specific style and tone you’re aiming for. Whether it’s formal, conversational, persuasive, or academic, I will adjust the writing to suit your audience and intent.
Will you change my writing significantly?
I will never alter your message or voice without your approval. For copyediting, my goal is to improve your writing while preserving your original tone, meaning, and style. Major changes are only suggested if they significantly enhance clarity or readability. This is also why I utilize Track Changes and Comments in Microsoft Word, so you can see why I recommend certain changes.
Can you edit my work if it has already been proofread?
Absolutely! Sometimes, a second pair of eyes can catch errors or improve readability. I offer line editing/copyediting even if you’ve already had your document proofread. The two services complement each other.
What if I need a quick turnaround or rush service?
If you have a tight deadline, I offer rush services for an additional fee. Let me know your deadline, and I will prioritize your project to ensure it’s completed on time.
How can I know if we will be a good fit?
I offer free 1,000-word sample edits so you can get a good feel for my editing style and see if you would like to move forward with me as your editor or proofreader. If you would like to do this, please fill out the contact form HERE.
If you would like to move forward after looking over the sample edits, I will create a proposal, contract, and invoice for you to fill out so our partnership can officially begin!
Do you guarantee satisfaction?
Yes, your satisfaction is my priority! If you're not happy with the results, I will work with you to revise the edits until you’re completely satisfied, within reason. I aim to ensure your writing is polished and meets your expectations.
